Electricity sharing is, in the wording of the act, the use of one’s own generated or stored electricity at a metering point other than the one where it arose — for a reason other than sale. The definition sits in § 3 letter b) point 19 of act no. 251/2012 Z. z. on energy, and the recalculation mechanism is operated by the short-term market organiser in the EDC system (Collection of Laws of the Slovak Republic; time version effective from 1 July 2026, verified in Slov-Lex).
This text reconstructs the mechanism from the act and from the methodological documentation of the system operator. It is not a registration guide, not advice on contracts, and it contains no calculation of savings for a specific building: what is set out are the rules, not an estimate of the result.
What electricity sharing is under the act
The act distinguishes two cases. The first is electricity generated or stored in a facility operated by an active customer or an energy community and used at another of its metering or feed-in points than the one where it arose. The second is electricity provided to the point of another active customer or energy community, either free of charge or for payment.
The bearer of the relationship is not a person but a group of points. Under § 3 letter b) point 20, a sharing group is a group of metering and feed-in points formed by at least one metering point and one feed-in point between which electricity is shared. One point cannot be a member of two groups at once.
The decisive threshold is in § 6. For an active customer, energy business does not include generation in facilities with a total installed capacity up to 1 MW inclusive, storage up to 1 MW inclusive, or the supply of electricity; for generation up to 11 kW it is not a business even outside the active customer regime, provided the generator claims no support by surcharge. Above those thresholds a licence for energy business is required. Both values come from the time version of act no. 251/2012 Z. z. effective from 1 July 2026, brought to that wording by amendment no. 116/2026 Z. z.
Who founds the group and from which moment it runs
The group is founded by the person authorised to act for it, inside the EDC system. Three conditions are checked at the level of the point: every metering or feed-in point must carry an interval meter, the group must contain at least one generating or storage facility, and a point must not be a member of another sharing group (OKTE, a. s.; Electricity sharing section, introductory information, retrieved on 23 August 2026).
Geography plays no part. Metering and feed-in points do not have to be with the same supplier and do not have to be near each other; the only territorial condition is that they lie on the territory of the Slovak Republic. The distance between source and consumption is therefore not a parameter of the mechanism, which sets it apart from schemes tied to a single building or a single site.
The moment from which a configuration applies is shifted by a day. The setting of the method is always made at least one calendar day in advance and its validity starts no earlier than the beginning of the next calendar day after saving. Changing the configuration automatically sets an upper time limit on the previous one as of that same day.
Access to the system has two modes. A user logs in with a certificate from a certification authority on the list the operator publishes, and for small sources login by SMS is possible; creating a user is in every case subject to approval on the operator’s side. Only then follows the data provision contract, without which the group cannot be founded.
Step by step: from the licence to the sharing group
The procedure has seven steps and the first three of them run outside the EDC system, that is before the group can be founded at all. The table below lines them up in the order in which they follow, together with what the output of each step is; the registration regime differs by the installed capacity of the source and decides which document is needed.

The first practical input is the EIC codes of the metering and feed-in points, which have to be ready before the contract request is filed. Their list is part of the group configuration and changes only by amending it.
Three allocation methods and the order of iterations
The calculation runs on a daily basis for every quarter-hour. Deliveries from all feed-in points of the group are first pooled into a single virtual source, and electricity is distributed from it in iterations. The parameter of each iteration is the maximum percentage share of the so far unused electricity of the virtual source that is to be redistributed in it.

The rules and the parameters of the iterations are set out in the methodological documentation of the system operator in the wording retrieved on 23 August 2026. The methods may be used repeatedly over any subset of points and in any order, while every point must be used in at least one iteration. Points without a defined order are left out of the priority method, points without a defined weight out of the static one.
The percentage share in the static method is not a contractual constant. The documentation gives an example: with three points of equal weight 1 the shares come to 33,333 %, with weights 1, 1 and 2 they come to 25 %, 25 % and 50 %. Only those points whose offtake has not yet been fully satisfied enter an iteration, and the shares are calculated from those alone — if one of the three points with weights 1, 1 and 2 drops out, the remaining two split 50 % and 50 %.
Where the mechanism stops
It stops at the metered offtake. The static method allocates at most up to the metered offtake of the individual points, and the dynamic one works only with the part of the offtake that was not covered by preceding iterations. Electricity therefore cannot be assigned to a point that did not take it in the given quarter-hour.
If unused electricity remains after all the iterations, it is assigned back to the feed-in points from which it was delivered into the distribution system, in the proportion of the metered deliveries of the individual points. The remainder therefore does not vanish and does not stay in the system — it returns where it came from, and is handled further outside the sharing regime.
The dynamic method changed between implementation phases. According to the documentation it was introduced in phase 0, the change in phase 1 being that it applies only to those points of the group that have it assigned and whose offtake at the same time was not fully covered by preceding iterations; the offtake taken for the proportion is only the part not yet covered.
What this shows on the side of the metering point
The result appears in the billing inputs, not in a separate document. The system operator states that once the group is founded its members can view the results directly in EDC and export the volume that was shared; that sum is then to be reflected in the invoice from the electricity supplier for the metering point concerned.
The denominator behind every share is one quarter-hour and one iteration, not a month and not the annual consumption of the point. The same point may hold a different share in two consecutive quarter-hours without any change of configuration, because the composition of an iteration depends on whose offtake has already been covered.
Conclusions
Electricity sharing is a statutory category, not a commercial product. § 3 letter b) point 19 of act no. 251/2012 Z. z. defines it as the use of one’s own generated or stored electricity away from the place where it arose, and as the provision of electricity to another active customer, free of charge or for payment.
The entry condition is metering and membership, not distance. Every point needs an interval meter, the group needs at least one generating facility or storage facility, and a point may be a member of only one group. The points may sit with different suppliers and anywhere on the territory of the Slovak Republic.
The licence thresholds are 11 kW and 1 MW. Under § 6, energy business does not include generation up to 11 kW without a claimed surcharge, nor, for an active customer, generation and storage up to 1 MW inclusive. Above that level a licence for energy business is required.
The share is a variable, not a constant. The calculation runs daily for every quarter-hour, an iteration counts only the points whose offtake has not yet been covered, and the unused remainder returns to the feed-in points in the proportion of their metered deliveries. The system in which this is counted handles three further areas.
