The annual electricity balance contains a line called „gross inland consumption“ and a line called „final consumption“. In 2024 the first stood at 9 284 TJ and the second at 77 083 TJ (ŠÚ SR, report Energ 7-12; DATAcube, table en2001rs, updated 19. 12. 2025). The gap is 8,30-fold and it does not arise from an error: both lines are correct and both measure a different quantity.

This text is an analysis of one statistical table, not a technical manual and not advice on electricity offtake. It contains no supplier recommendation and no calculation for a specific building; its purpose is to keep two figures from the same source from being confused when locations are compared or when consumption is argued about.

The headline figure: 77 083 TJ of final consumption

Final consumption of electricity in Slovakia reached 77 083 TJ in 2024, which converts to 21 412 GWh, since 1 GWh equals 3,6 TJ. The line called „final energy consumption“ carries the same value in the table, meaning that for electricity there is no non-energy part.

The path to that figure can be assembled from the lines of the same column, without any external input. The table below sets out the whole chain together with its control sums.

The source is the annual processing of statistical reports: according to the note attached to the table, the data result from annual processing of statistical reports and are collected from producers, importers, exporters and traders in fuels and energy. The table holds 48 indicators and the series reaches back to 2001; the last completed year is 2024, and the DATAcube collection index gives an update date of 19 December 2025.

Seven control sums close without a remainder, the internal ones included: 65 635 + 20 484 equals 86 119, and the sum of the three sector lines equals 77 083. Anyone can check this directly in the machine output of table en2001rs, filtered to 2024.

What final consumption is made of

Final consumption is split in the table into three main lines — industry, transport and other activities — and the last of them breaks down further into households, trade and services, and agriculture. The overview below lists the five resulting sectors for 2024 together with their share, so that it is visible which items decide the total figure.

The denominator of all five shares is final consumption of electricity for calendar year 2024 in terajoules, not generation and not installed capacity. A different denominator produces different shares, and comparison with them makes no sense.

Industry: 42,75 % of final consumption

Industry took 32 951 TJ, which is 9 153 GWh. Inside that sum sit engineering and transport equipment at 9 533 TJ, iron and steel at 6 304 TJ, chemicals at 3 755 TJ, non-metallic mineral products at 2 646 TJ and consumption not specified elsewhere at 3 661 TJ.

The year-on-year movement is strongest in this sector of the whole table. Against 2021, when industry took 41 789 TJ, the drop is 21,15 %, while total final consumption fell over the same period by 16,19 %. The difference between those two percentages means that the share of industry in electricity consumption shrank over three years.

Within industry the heaviest weight belongs to engineering and transport equipment: 9 533 TJ out of 32 951 TJ is 28,93 % of the sector and at the same time 12,37 % of total final consumption. Iron and steel makes up 19,13 % of the sector, chemicals 11,40 %. The denominator in the first figure is industry, in the second the whole of final consumption — swapping those two bases changes the result by more than a factor of two.

Households: 26,92 % of final consumption

Households took 20 750 TJ, that is 5 764 GWh. This line is the steadiest in the whole table: against 2021 it fell by 3,42 %, while industry fell by 21,15 %. Over the period from 2020 to 2024 the value stays between 20 750 and 21 485 TJ.

The stability of this line has a direct consequence for how the total figure is read. If total final consumption falls and households do not, someone else is falling — and in this case it is industry. The total figure therefore says nothing in itself about whether offtake in a production hall has changed.

The five-year series of final consumption shows the volumes involved: 85 726 TJ in 2020, 91 976 TJ in 2021, 82 333 TJ in 2022, 76 583 TJ in 2023 and 77 083 TJ in 2024 (ŠÚ SR, table en2001rs). Between 2021 and 2023 the total value fell by 15 393 TJ, while the household line changed over the same period by only 432 TJ.

Trade and services: 26,00 % of final consumption

Trade and services took 20 041 TJ, that is 5 567 GWh, which is 349 TJ less than households. The two sectors are practically the same size in 2024, although their offtake profile differs — households peak in the evening, trade and services during the working day.

The balance, however, does not contain that difference. The lines are annual sums of energy in TJ and contain no capacity, no timing and no tariff band. Anything about peaks and reserved capacity comes from other sources — for instance from the data of the short-term electricity market operator — not from this table.

Where the error starts: gross inland consumption is not consumption

The line „gross inland consumption“ stood at 9 284 TJ in 2024, which is 2 579 GWh. It arises as primary production plus imports minus exports, that is 19 890 + 52 070 − 62 676. For electricity, primary production covers nuclear and hydro energy and further primary sources, while generation in thermal plants enters the balance only as the output of transformation.

The line therefore describes the net position of the country towards abroad plus primary production — not the volume that passes through electricity meters. Confusing these two lines is not a theoretical matter. If „gross inland consumption“ is used as the consumption of the country, the resulting figure is 8,30 times smaller than actual offtake, and every share calculated from such a denominator will be 8,30 times higher than it should be. In 2023 the same ratio was even sharper: 6 742 TJ against 76 583 TJ, that is 11,36-fold, because the balance of foreign trade was different that year.

For a comparison to make sense, the denominator has to be final consumption, or else the transformation output of 86 119 TJ — always with a statement of which of them was used. Gross inland consumption moves with the balance of foreign trade: with imports of 52 070 TJ and exports of 62 676 TJ in 2024, a shift of a few percent in either of those two items is enough to move the resulting line by tens of percent.

What never reaches final consumption

Between the available volume of 95 403 TJ and final consumption of 77 083 TJ there are 18 320 TJ missing, which never pass through the metering point of an end customer. They break down into two items: consumption of the energy sector at 12 826 TJ and losses in transmission and distribution at 5 494 TJ.

Losses amount to 7,13 % of final consumption and rose year on year from 4 021 TJ to 5 494 TJ, that is by 36,63 %. Consumption of the energy sector is 14,89 % of the transformation output. Both items sit in the price paid by the end customer, yet neither appears as a separate line on any invoice.

Both items come from the same annual collection for 2024 (ŠÚ SR, table en2001rs; updated 19. 12. 2025). The split of losses between the transmission system, operated by Slovenská elektrizačná prenosová sústava, and the distribution systems is not contained in this table.

Conclusions

Final consumption of electricity in Slovakia stood at 77 083 TJ in 2024, that is 21 412 GWh. It was split between industry with 42,75 %, households with 26,92 %, trade and services with 26,00 %, transport with 3,36 % and agriculture with 0,97 %.

Gross inland consumption is a different line and stood at 9 284 TJ in 2024. It is primary production plus imports minus exports, that is the net position towards abroad, and not the volume taken behind the meter. The ratio between the two lines was 8,30-fold in 2024 and 11,36-fold in 2023 — it moves with the trade balance, not with offtake.

Between the available volume and final consumption there are 18 320 TJ missing. Of that, 12 826 TJ is consumed by the energy sector itself and 5 494 TJ leaves as losses in transmission and distribution; losses rose year on year by 36,63 %.

Every share needs its denominator stated. The shares in this text are calculated from final consumption for 2024 in terajoules. With „generation“, „gross inland consumption“ or „installed capacity“ as the denominator the figures come out different, and three such shares cannot be compared with one another. The values can be checked directly in table en2001rs of the DATAcube database, filtered to 2024.
